Cremation has become more popular in recent years as a way to honor the passing of a loved one by scattering the ashes at the decedent’s favorite place.  For sailors, the favorite place might be to have the ashes released over the water; and for pilots, in the air above a favorite spot.  When done with appropriate dignity, scattering ashes from an airplane can be an appropriate way of honoring the wishes of a loved one.  It is an environmentally friendly way to return to the Earth without consuming valuable natural resources. Generally speaking, cremation is cheaper than traditional burial services.

Once the remains are received, the ashes will be scattered as soon as possible, weather permitting.  The actual flight should take about one hour.

Yes. Texas Health and Safety Code 716.304 of the Texas law allows for the release of scattered ashes.  The FAA allows the release “if reasonable precautions are taken to avoid injury or damage to persons or property.”  If it is desired to scatter the ashes over private property, the property owner must give permission to release the ashes.  Releasing the ashes over a state or national park requires permission and is available but may delay the scattering of ashes.

Just about anywhere!  Typically, the ashes are scattered over the Gulf of Mexico along the Texas coast but they can be scattered over private property as long as the property owner gives permission.  Ashes can be released at 10,000 feet to allow the remains to gently float down to earth carried along by the winds.
